RIDE REVIEWS by Liz: Maltatal and Nockalm 11 to 12 October 2018

Maltatal and Nockalm, 11-12 October 2018

11.10.2018 – We started with a hearty breakfast at Zecafe in Gosau – a bit of a late start (11:00 o’clock). Windy and sunny, damp in the shade, a few autumn leaves on the road. Rode from Gosau – Russbach – Annaberg – St. Martin – Eben – Radstadt – Untertauern – Obertauern – Tweng – Mauterndorf – Neusess – Schloss Moosham – Pischelsdorf – Bundschuh – Schönfeld (stopped for photos) – Innerkrems, Kremsbrücke. Checked into Hotel Post in Innerkrems and had a quick lunch. Carried on to Eisentratten and Gmünd, then turned right onto Maltatalstrasse. Maut Euro 11.00 per Motorrad, parts of the road are contraflow controlled by traffic lights. One of the tunnels has a sharp turn in it (almost a hairpin bend). Got to the top to the dam (1933m) – very cold and windy – too cold to stay very long and we were really late (16:30).Sun was gone – even more cold – so we decided to go back to the hotel. Room 9 on 2nd floor – a bit cold despite radiators turned on full. Needs a pump for hot water. Anway, good value: Euro 80.00 for B&B. Dinner: Fritattensuppe, Truthahn Cordon Bleu and some sort of a vanilla custard.

A few facts: Kremsbrücke under der A10 Autobahn. Length: 2607 m (longest road bridge in Austria) 1978-1980. Kremsbücke to Pressingberg. Concrete arch Kölnbreinsperre dams the Malta River. 200m high, 626m long, 7.6m wide on the crest, 41m wide at the base, Volume 1,580,000 cubic metres. Length of the lake 4.5km. It is Austria’s tallest dam. 14.3km scenic road throught the Maltatal. Road open from 9 May to 26 October. The dam lies inside the Hohe Tauern National Park.

12.10.2018 – Kremsbrücke – Innerkrems – Nockalmstrasse – short stop at Eisentalhöhe at 2042m for coffee – another short stop at Glockenhütte at 2024m – then carried on to Turracher Höhe – Predlitz – Murau – Sölkpass.

A few facts about Nockalmstrasse: 52 hairpin bends, 34km long, Toll: Euro 12.00 per motorbike.

In Murau we got stopped by a policeman for speeding – Geoff was going in front of me and I followed him. Ooops – needed a lot of charming to only pay Euro 20.00 for the both of us.

Stopped at Hansenalm on Sölkpass for a hearty lunch.

Verdict: We LOVE Nockalmstrasse !
